Life is a struggle. Every day we strain to meet the demands of the conditions of our lives. Sometimes when our existence is overwhelmed with carking cares, it’s even tough to get out of bed. But somehow if we’re lucky we manage to get through the travails that beset us until we reach the end of the day where we hope to enjoy a brief respite, only to undertake the process all over again the following day.

Our daily struggle can seem intolerably interminable. But we can gain consolation in the realization that although we are subject to a repetitive routine, we can absorb some wisdom along the way. That is because our life is not limited to a purely physical dimension—it partakes of a spiritual dimension as well—and it is this spiritual realm that is similar to that which we experience when we surf; embarking on our day each day is like getting ready to hit the waves.

Whenever we face an issue in our life with which we are grappling, this struggle is like grabbing a board and setting out to charge the surf. We know the crashing waves in front of us will be tough to get passed but to refrain from the struggle is to capitulate before the reward of the struggle can be gained. So, we take on the endeavor, knowing if the breakers can be overcome a reward will ensue.

It’s always a trial of perseverance to get passed the breaking waves, much like it is a struggle to get beyond our suffering, but if we stick with it there’s a chance we will get to a point where we can recover, much as when we make it out to the lineup, where we can rest again. And the larger the waves, the tougher it is to get out there, but it rewards commensurately because once you make it, now you can catch the screamers (surf lingo for huge waves).

When we are at the lineup, waiting to catch the next wave, we do not know when the ideal wave will come. Catching the perfect wave is always a matter of serendipity. We can be “all at sea” not knowing when that next one will roll through or even if it will ever arrive. Then when you see the wave and you go for it, position yourself, paddle, catch it, pop up and the next thing you know—there you are! Riding the face! Here is the ecstasy where, as the Beach Boys sang, you’re “sittin’ on top of the world”. Waiting for remedies to a spiritual struggle occurs in much the same way, necessitating the patience to wait for insight like waiting to catch that perfect wave. After mindfully dwelling, suddenly we have a glimpse. The wave or the thought appears on the horizon and we struggle to catch it, and then when we have that flash—whether it be the pop up or an epiphany—the result is the same: now you’re free! Both riding the wave on your board and in your thought, you’re liberated to surf the waves of the ocean or the waves of your mind in any way you want, enjoying the culminating reward for which you struggled and endured.

The ocean has a blissful, spiritual effect and surfing, like any surfer will tell you, is like a religion—got to get in the water religiously—like observing the Sabbath. In the process of surfing, reading and writing, I’ve had to utilize creativity to cope, and I’m hoping that the product of my struggle—the poetic affirmations in this book–will help the reader to realize that they are not alone and, in this recognition, remain buoyant in their sea of suffering. Each poem is the result of a mental and spiritual wave I have struggled to catch and ride. Now the reader can take what they have to offer as boards to surf on their own spiritual sea of serendipity.
