It gives us great joy to dedicate this invaluable practical guide to Indian Rhythm at the lotus feet of Lord Krishna on the blessed occasion of Vasant Panchami (Festival of Spring in India). The present “Taal Deepika” combined volume is a compilation of a practical four part series on the Indian Rhythmic System of Taal and Laya published in Hindi originally in 1934 on the same occasion of Vasant Panchami and dedicated to Lord Shri Krishna, by late Shri Mannuji Mridangacharya of Benaras.

This book in its Hindi digitized format is a direct result of an earlier effort to translate and share the entire collection of Taal and Laya theory from these same volumes in English for global students of Indian rhythmic science. This earlier book is published and made available on Amazon in digital Kindle and paperback editions as “Science of Rhythm” in the Nada Yoga series of books on Indian art and culture dedicated to Lord Shri Krishna.

The original publication has been out of print for many decades and it gives us tremendous satisfaction to share the entire four-volume series published here in its entirety in a new digital format for the whole world. The book is invaluable for the students and connoisseurs of North Indian classical rhythm. The material in the volume contains ingredients for all students and lovers of Indian Taal and Laya who want to explore the holistic aspects of Indian rhythm. Presented are rare Kaydas, Bols, Tukda, Tihais and theoretical instructions of Ten Prana of Laya. The Taal covered in detail are major rhythmic structures of 6, 10, 12, 14, and 16 beats. All base Thekas (patterns) of many rare Taals are also included.

The emphasis is on the Tabla instrument but many of the ingredients can be applied to Mridang as well by some basic improvisations by the seeker in some cases and in many cases without any changes at all. Mridang is the original parent Indian rhythmic instrument preceding the present Tabla. Since Tabla is the initial primary focus, a lot of material covers the basic 16 beat rhythm Tritaal which is the main parent structure of Tabla study. Also, the 12 beat Chautaal of Mridang (Ektaal equivalent in Tabla) is covered in good depth as Chautaal forms the base of Mridang study.

“Mannuji” was a Krishna devoted soul who played Mridang during Kirtan Seva (devotional service) in Gopal Mandir in Benaras for Lord Krishna with daily discipline and commitment. His “Taal” was offered in the service of the divine Providence. He was also the head of the Rhythm and Taal section teaching at the famous BHU (Benaras Hindu University). He represents Benaras Gharana and learned Tabla and Mridang from the late Pandit Bholanath Pathak of Benaras. He was also equally versed in Swara and Laya having intimate knowledge of Kirtan traditions of Gopal Mandir. Above all, he was a selfless ‘saintly’ soul who made the rare effort to document his whole life’s rhythm and its lessons in a four-volume series called Taal Deepika in the year 1934 as published here in digital format. Shri Mannuji was also the teacher of the famous Late Pandit Amarnath Mishraji (grandfather of present Mahantji Shri Vishwambharnath Mishraji of Sankat Mochan temple). Baba Amarnathji was the original co-founder and sponsor of the International Dhrupad Festival started in 1974.
